Let’s talk about Emigre

Details

In 1984, Emigre Magazine‘s first issue was released as one of the first publications designed on a Macintosh to be focused on graphic design. The magazine was heavily influenced by experimental typography, post-modernism, and the digital design era. Emigre ran through 2005, and in its two-decade run, it featured prolific designers’ writing and design work.

Today’s Emigre’s legacy continues to impact design culture, aesthetics and is a reminder of the power of independent publishing and devotion to craft and theory.

In 2020, The Letterform Archive digitized and archived the entire Emigre collection which is now available through their website. The Chicago Graphic Design Club was originally established as a book club and continues to host group conversations focused around on design writing.

We gathered as a group to discuss Emigre’s legacy and impact and we encouraged attendees to visit the Emigre collection available here and come prepared to share your favorite articles and design from the collection.

We had a special guest attend, Rick Valicenti, who was featured in numerous Emigre issues. He shared personal stories from his involvement with the publication.

As always, our discussions are informal, welcoming, and open to everyone.
