Since 2022, Rick Valicenti has been living in another country. While he practiced design in Chicago for over four decades, he was one of the canon’s most distinguished designers. He remains a keen observer of design-driven culture, and Rick held sage-like wisdom that proved valuable to Chicago’s next generation of designers. That Thursday marked his first live chat occasion with the Chicago Graphic Design Club.
Broadcasting from his basement studio in Toronto, Rick was open to any topic of conversation and willing to be prompted by questions or topics. He shared seminal works from his recent and old archives.
As a self-proclaimed pack-rat, Rick has collected 20th century design objects, correspondence from colleagues, and things he made. We received a virtual tour of his modest working studio, and most importantly, we had dedicated time in conversation with Rick.
