Capture type and design elements from gravestones using paper and charcoal. A slow walk through Graceland Cemetery. Supplies provided.
Cemeteries are some of the best type specimens in the city. Hand-cut letterforms, ornaments, borders, and symbols, all made to last and mostly overlooked.
We’ll meet at the front entrance and walk the grounds together, stopping wherever the lettering and details catch our eye. Using paper and charcoal, we’ll capture type and design elements from the gravestones to take home. Supplies are provided. Bring comfortable shoes, clothing for the weather, water or snacks, and something flat to carry your pages in.
Why $5?
The ticket covers supplies and gives us a headcount, so everyone gets what they need.
Please be respectful
Graceland is a historic cemetery and a place of rest. Keep voices low, stay on the paths where you can, and don’t step or sit on grave markers. Only work from stones that are sturdy and in good condition. If a stone is crumbling, flaking, or fragile, leave it be. When in doubt, skip it.
Weather
This isn’t a rain-or-shine event. If the forecast looks rough, we’ll make the call the day before and let registered guests know by email & Instagram. We will look to reschedule to a different day.
