Seeing Anew: A Downtown Chicago Walking Tour

We discovered the hidden layers of Chicago’s iconic landmarks with a unique walking tour aimed to shift your perspective. Led by CGDC member John Robert Hatherly, this experience is inspired by the “finding tools” and pedagogy of Sister Corita Kent, encouraging us all to, “see anew.”

What took place

  • A 2-hour guided tour covering approximately 2 miles of downtown Chicago
  • Limited to 15 participants for an intimate and interactive experience
  • Engaging discussions, reflective moments, and activities designed to help you “see anew”
  • Process of creating compositions, layouts, and typographic expressions through photography

Agenda

  • 11:00 a.m. Meet at the Art Institute Front Steps
  • 11:15 a.m. Start of Walking Tour
  • 1:00 p.m. Conclusion at the Art Institute’s Modern Wing Entrance and optional post-event hangout/socializing at nearby venue

 

About guide

John Robert Hatherly is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, organizer, consultant, and podcast host. They are currently engaged as the founder of Chamber, a values-driven brand and creative consultancy, founder and steward of Sondwerk, their artistic studio for self-initiated projects, and as the creator and host of Infinite Search: Conversations of the humankind.

John is a leading member of the Chicago Graphic Design Club, a member of the Society of Typographic Arts, a sustaining member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, a member of the Spudnik Press Cooperative, a former resident artist at Platform Studios, and a member of The Design Museum of Chicago.

Hatherly believes in mastery taking generations and approaches their work with a sense of naïvety and wonder—an infinite search for voice through a series of discrete, playful explorations in a search for forms that illuminate life.
