Emotions, design, and creativity with Brooke Kravitz

Brooke Kravitz grew up in Chesterton, a small town in Indiana. In 2012, she moved to Chicago to study Graphic Design at DePaul University. Before that, she spent 13 years in the Girl Scouts where she nurtured an appreciation for community service, self-expression, and being vocal about positive change.

It was actually through a field trip to Chicago, with the Girl Scouts, that she fell in love with the Vincentian and community service focus of DePaul University. It was here that she learned the craft of design and appreciation for using design as a means of communication.

According to her website, she describes her approach to design as mixing equal parts craft and passion to bring people a sense of belonging.

Currently, Kravitz works at the intersection of technology, business, and design — she builds comprehensive digital experiences that are rooted in strategy, research, and design, for a wide range of industries and sectors. When she’s not working, you can find her absorbing inspiration from the city’s vibrant landscape, and experimenting with a variety of visual mediums.

Visually, her personal work has an air of playfulness, experimentation, and motion. And she often merges her skills with altruism and seeks opportunities that empower others to be more self-aware and conscious of the impact of their actions.

In the Summer of 2020, amidst the social unrest in response to the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement, Kravitz designed an interactive social justice workshop that sought to encourage teams at a large consulting firm, to find ways in which they can through small actions, make a positive difference in society.

”If each of us knew and understood our role as a social change agent, it would lead to lifelong, sustainable involvement in activism.” — Kravitz

Kravitz’s view on design over the past ten years has shifted to a more holistic perspective — she believes that we are all making design choices when we choose our outfits, cook a meal, or engage in ordinary activities. And she doesn’t shy away from leaning into her emotions and exploring the way we show up in the workplace. Her curiosity for people empowers her to design with empathy and care and put the needs of who she designs for first.

In episode four of Underscore, our podcast, Kravitz speaks with host, Christian Solorzano, and shares the creative journey that led her to the city of Chicago, the way her definition of design and creativity has shifted over time, and the importance of opening up to our emotions.

My favorite part of the design process is taking a brand tone and identity and translating into an experience.
