Examining Sister Corita’s 10 Rules

In 2023, I co-hosted a limited series with my friend and collaborator John Hatherly.

We spent a few months discussing and examining Sister Corita Kent’s Immaculate Heart College Art Department Rules. We sought ways to interpret each rule within the context of our own lives and creative processes and we did so through vulnerable conversations about our perspectives on various facets of design and art.

Sister Corita Kent crafted these rules together in the 1960s to inspire her students to take ownership over their work with and be able to use creativity and design as methods for social injustice and provoking work.

Over 60 years later, these rules continue to hang in classrooms and office settings as reminders to continue to reacquaint ourselves with what is important to us and how we show up through our work. Each rule invites us to think about the meaning of trust, play, discipline, risk, experimenting — and, most importantly, joy. We hope you find these rules as inspiring as we did and that you enjoy our conversations.
