Reframing Design Through Anti-Racism

About: We had a conversation with Surbhi Kalra, design lead at ChiByDesign. She shared her journey as a designer and highlighted how ChiByDesign approaches anti-racist design. She walked us through a recent collaboration with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services and Columbus foundation where her team identified how racism impacts the lives of the individuals involved in the foster care system.

Surbhi Kalra shared:

I am a strategist, researcher, and visual communicator, working as a Design lead at ChiByDesign. Through my work, I serve those in need and bring their voices forward. I like drawing from my sensitivity and analytical thinking to bring clarity to complex issues.

My experience lies in bringing design thinking and approaches to experience and systems-level interventions in sectors like education, child welfare, juvenile justice, law, financial services, food, healthcare, architecture, community development, and ensuring the outcomes center the voices of those impacted/most affected.
